right because on a vw 5speed reverse is where 1st usually is, its a dogleg layout

No, first is first, and second is second (etc.). You have to push the shifter straight down, then up and to the left to get reverse. Most people look for it under 5th. It may be different in older VWs, but that's my experience since the mid-'80s.

What I meant was it usually goes left to right 1,2,3,4,5,R but the vw shifter goes R,1,2,3,4,5

Its a dog leg because if it were a 4 speed it would look like a dog with its leg up
